A CheckPie starts with a photo of the receipt. You scan it, finerd reads the items, you share a link, and everyone taps what they had.
CheckPie has to be enabled for your account. If you see Not available yet — “Splitting receipts is not enabled for your account” — that’s what’s missing.

Scan the receipt

Open CheckPies and choose New CheckPie — a plain + in the apps — or pick CheckPie when you create a transaction. On iPhone and iPad you can also add the CheckPie control — Scan a check and split it with friends — to Control Center, or to the Lock Screen on iPhone, and go straight to the camera. On the Scan the receipt screen:
  • Take a photo — opens the camera. Fit the whole receipt in frame.
  • Choose a file — pick one or more existing photos or PDFs. On a computer you can also drop them onto the page, and Take a photo isn’t offered there.
Accepted formats are JPG, PNG, HEIC and PDF. finerd uploads the file, then reads it — usually a few seconds, and it gives up after two minutes. You don’t fill anything in by hand first. There’s no form before the scan: the receipt is the input.

If finerd can’t read the receipt

Three things can come back instead of a result: Try again reuses the photo you already sent; Start a new split throws it away and takes you back to the scan screen.

Invite people to join

When the receipt is read, finerd shows the merchant, the total, and a QR code, under the heading Invite friends to join. You can add people later. Hand the phone round for people to scan, or use Copy link and drop it in the group chat. The link is already live at this point — people can join while you’re still on this screen. Start splitting opens the CheckPie so you can take your own shares. You don’t have to: back out instead and it’s waiting for you under CheckPies.
Guests need no finerd account and no app — the link opens in a browser and they enter a name to join. If someone already has finerd installed, the link opens in the app instead. Same screen either way.
You can invite more people at any time from the share button in the CheckPie header, which offers the same QR code plus Add guest manually — use that for someone at the table who isn’t going to pick items on their own phone.

What you land on

The CheckPie itself is one screen, headed Tap your items:
  • The people in the split run along the top. Tap a person to pick items on their behalf.
  • The receipt’s items sit below as cards. Tapping one claims a share of it.
  • Beside them: Services, Who paid, your own Your total, and who owes whom.
Nothing is locked. Everything below can be changed after you’ve shared the link, and everyone sees each change immediately.

Fix the receipt after sharing

The scan is a first draft, not a final answer — correct it on the CheckPie itself. Items. Open an item to change its Item name or Price. Shares is how many ways the line is divided: set a bottle of wine to 4 shares and four people can each take one, with per [amount] under the count. You can’t drop the share count below what people have already taken. If you claimed a share you didn’t want, Give back a share releases it. Services are the amounts on top of the items — Tax, Tip, Discount, Service, Delivery or Other. Use Add service to add one the scan missed. You get one of each: a type you’ve used drops out of the list, so a second tax goes under Other, and once all six are in place Add service disappears. Setting a service’s amount to zero removes it. Nobody claims a service directly; each is spread across people in proportion to the items they took. Until there’s a tip, the Services block offers one outright — tap 15% and it’s added. finerd picks those percentages for the country it works out from the receipt’s currency, falling back to your time zone: 15/18/20% in the US and Canada, 10/12.5/15% in the UK and Ireland, 10/15/20% in Mexico and across the Middle East and North Africa, and 5/10/15% everywhere else. Open the tip itself to switch between a flat Amount and a Percentage. Who paid. Use Add contributor to record who actually put money down, and how much. That’s what turns the split into “who owes whom” rather than just “who ate what”.
Guests can edit too. Anyone with the link can fix an item, add a service, or add a participant — not only you. Deleting a receipt is yours alone.
The banner under the items counts what’s still open — [n] items left to claim — and Jump to unassigned scrolls to the first one. Chase those down before you treat the split as settled. A CheckPie stands on its own; it isn’t a transaction until you say so. When the split looks right, choose Sync with finerd transaction and finerd books it, categorising every line of the receipt — it warns that this can take up to a minute. After that, Update transaction pushes later changes across. Guests without a finerd account see an invitation to track their side of the debt in finerd instead.
