# Manage AI access

> Choose read-only or read-and-write access for an AI assistant, see which spaces and family data it reaches, disconnect it and fix connection errors.

An AI assistant gets into your finerd records only after you approve it on a finerd page and choose **Read only** or **Read & Write**. One connection covers every finerd space you belong to, and you end it by removing finerd in the assistant.

AI access needs **Pro** in the space you ask about. Connecting, choosing access and disconnecting happen in the AI assistant and on the finerd sign-in page in your browser: the finerd web, Android and iOS apps have no list of connected assistants. To connect an assistant for the first time, see [Connect an AI assistant](/ai#connect).

When you connect an assistant, finerd opens a page in your browser with the assistant's name, the finerd account it asks for and **Choose access level**:

| Access | What the assistant can do |
| - | - |
| **Read only** (selected initially) | View your transactions, accounts, balances, categories, bills and reports, and build reports from them. It doesn't even see the tools that change data. |
| **Read & Write** | Also add, edit and delete transactions, transfers and tags, create accounts, categories, merchants and budgets, and the rest listed in [Update your records](/ai#changes). |

Select **Allow** to connect with the access you chose, or **Deny** to cancel.

</Frame>

With either access, the assistant can't move real money, connect a bank, delete a transaction imported from a bank, or delete a category, tag or account.

The access level belongs to the connection. You can't change it later: to switch between **Read only** and **Read & Write**, [disconnect the assistant](#disconnect) and connect it again. Each assistant has its own connection, so Claude can have **Read only** while ChatGPT has **Read & Write**.

Changes made with **Read & Write** are saved in finerd right away, like your own edits, and stay after you disconnect.

<h2 id="spaces">
  Which spaces the assistant sees
</h2>

<span id="one-space-at-a-time" />

One connection covers every finerd space you're a member of: your Personal space and any business spaces. You don't pick a space when you connect. The assistant works in one space at a time and asks which one to use when you have several; name the space in your question, for example "in my Business space", and name another to switch. You don't need to reconnect.

If you leave a space or it's deleted, the assistant loses access to it within a minute. Ask it to list your spaces again.

Pro is checked for each space you ask about; in a business space, for your seat in it. In a space without Pro, the assistant can still list your spaces, but every request for data gets the reply "This feature needs a paid Finerd plan" with a link to upgrade. See [Manage your finerd subscription](/account/manage-subscription).

<h2 id="family">
  Family data
</h2>

Family accounting links your Personal space with your partner's; it isn't a separate space. Through your connection, the assistant sees what you see in your own space:

* your accounts and transactions, private ones included;
* the copies of transactions your partner marked as **Family**;
* the accounts your partner marked as **Joint**, with their transactions from the start date.

It doesn't see your partner's private accounts and transactions. Your partner's assistant, if they connect one, sees only what you shared with them in the same way. See [What your partner sees](/family-accounting#partner-sees).

With **Read & Write**, the assistant follows the family rules of the app:

* It can't delete the copy of a transaction your partner shared with you.
* Marking a transaction as **Family** adds a copy to your partner's space. Removing the mark removes the copy, together with the category, split or debt your partner set on it.
* Renaming a category you share with your partner renames it for them too.

Before you let the assistant change family transactions, ask it to list what it's going to change.

<h2 id="security">
  Security and privacy
</h2>

<span id="privacy" />

* **You sign in to finerd, not to the assistant.** The sign-in and access page opens in your browser on finerd's own site. The assistant gets a key for your finerd records, never your email code.
* **Check the page before you select Allow.** It shows the finerd account the assistant asks for and where the key will go: **Verified via** a known domain, such as chatgpt.com, for a recognized assistant; **Identified by the app itself** when only the app vouches for its name; **Unknown app** otherwise. If you didn't start the connection, or the account isn't yours, select **Deny**.
* **finerd sends the key only to a known address:** Claude, ChatGPT, Google's AI services, or an app on your own computer, such as Claude Code or the Gemini CLI.
* **The connection stays signed in while you use it.** If you don't use it for 30 days, the assistant asks you to sign in to finerd again.
* **finerd doesn't receive your conversation**, only the assistant's requests for data. The records the assistant reads go to the AI service and are handled under its terms. See finerd's [Privacy Policy](https://finerd.ai/privacy-policy) and [Security](https://finerd.ai/security) pages.

<h2 id="disconnect">
  Disconnect an assistant
</h2>

Remove finerd in the assistant you connected. These steps come from each service's own help:

| Assistant | How to disconnect |
| - | - |
| Claude.ai, Claude Desktop | **Customize** → **Connectors**, then **Remove** or the **⋯** menu next to finerd. See [Anthropic's guide](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11175166-get-started-with-custom-connectors-using-remote-mcp). |
| Claude Code | Run `claude mcp remove finerd`, or run `/mcp`, select **finerd** and **Clear authentication**. |
| ChatGPT | **Settings** → **Apps** (or **Plugins**) → **finerd**; under **Connected accounts**, open **⋯** and select **Disconnect**. See [OpenAI's guide](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001494). |
| Gemini CLI | Run `gemini mcp remove finerd`. |

The assistant then stops using finerd. finerd isn't notified when you remove it, and finerd has no list of connections you could end yourself. If you think someone else has connected to your finerd, [contact support](/contact-us).

Disconnecting doesn't undo changes the assistant has already made. To connect again, with the same or a different access level, follow the steps for your assistant in [Connect an AI assistant](/ai#connect).

<h2 id="troubleshooting">
  Fix connection problems
</h2>

<span id="common-issues" />

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| **Invalid link** on the finerd page | Start the connection again in the assistant. Don't reuse a saved link to the finerd page. |
| **Could not read your session. Please sign in again and retry.** under **Allow** | The page waited too long or was already used. Start the connection again in the assistant. |
| The finerd page shows an account that isn't the one you want | Select **Deny**. Sign out of finerd in that browser, sign in to the right account and connect again. |
| The assistant says the connection or authorization expired and asks you to reconnect | Reconnect finerd in the assistant and sign in again. |
| The assistant can't change records, or reports that a tool "requires MCP\_READ\_WRITE" | The connection is **Read only**. [Disconnect](#disconnect) and connect again with **Read & Write**. |
| "This feature needs a paid Finerd plan" | The space you asked about doesn't have Pro. Upgrade at the link in the reply, or ask about a space with Pro. |
| "Requested space is not authorized" or access denied for a space | You're no longer a member of that space. Ask the assistant to list your spaces again. |
| The answer is about the wrong space | Name the space in your question. |
| "A data import is still running for this space" | Wait until the import finishes, then ask again. |
| "The space has no primary currency yet" | Open the space in finerd and finish setup: [choose its primary currency](/getting-started/initial-setup#primary-currency). |

If an error repeats, [contact support](/contact-us) with the question you asked, the time and the `traceId` from the error if there is one.
